This blog is for my Tech Applications class at SLU, but I think I'll add some of what goes on in my life as well

Halloween Night 1
Wow I have not posted in a while! I guess because nothing has happened lately. The only excitement was that I went home for fall break and Melissa came with me. It was a lot of fun. Did a lot of shopping. Well, this weekend is Halloween weekend. Last year's Halloween was not too fun. We basically were the clueless freshmen who just wandered everywhere. So far, this year is a lot better. O by the way I am Sookie from True Blood for Halloween. I LOVE my costume (mostly because i LOVE the show....), but anywho, last night we went to an ADG party and then to a BETA party. Both were not exceptionally fun, but it was a good time.
The one thing I do not understand about college Halloween, is who determined the rule that girls must dress up for Halloween like they do in Mean Girls....its always freezing this weekend so not too fun to have a lot of skin showing....
Well, hopefully Halloween round 2 will be fun!

Busy Busy
So last week was a busy one. I had my first school observation, I found out who my little is and DG had a date dash. The school observation was really cool. I observed in a special ed class and it was very enlightening. There were two kids who had Down Syndrome and they were adorable. I definitely did not give them enough credit. They could do so much more than I ever thought. The whole experience really changed my perspective off what special ed kids are capable of.
Next came Big Little Reveal. It was where I got to reveal myself to my little. I made her a hat (the coolest one)
and then we went to Fro-Yo. It was so much fun and I love my little Theresa!!!
Now for Thursday! I went to our first DG Date Dash. The theme was Country Clubs and Gangsta Thugs. I went as a gangsta. I couldn't really pull it off, but the dance was a lot of fun. I only went to 2 last year and I'm planning on going to a lot more this year. And then for Friday it was my roommate's birthday so we had a party for her. Overall, a really fun week. Saturday I did nothing and today I did nothing as well, and I'm currently watching a Pirates of the Caribbean marathon on TV. I get to go home on Friday!!!!!! I'm so excited to see everyone and to see my dog!!! I can't wait! 5 days!!!

Werewolves
So first of all, I can't believe another week has passed. Last year was just so miserable and this year is great and is flying by. Katie went home this weekend so Caroline, Victoria and I were left to our own devices. Friday I went to Caroline and Victoria's APO dance. (DG dances are better but don't tell anyone shh!). The theme was "walk of shame". Prove to me that a guy did not come up with this theme and I'll give you ten bucks. Girls in boy's shirts, short shorts and heels. Yea tell me a guy didn't think of that one. The dance was fun and was totally beat afterwards. Saturday I did absolutely nothing during the day. Mostly watched tv then that night made dinner for a bunch of people. It turned out really great and was a ton of fun. We then proceeded to watch The Hangover. Hilarious movie btw. Caroline and I then went to Nik's apartment to watch The Wolfman. Now keep in mind that I HATE werewolves. Idk why but I'm seriously scared of them. So was pretty much terrified to watch this movie, so I just started making witty comments throughout the movie and pretty soon we are laughing more than being scared.
All in all a good weekend. I get my Little Sister for DG this week! Super excited. Only 2 more weeks till fall break and home!!!!!!!

Finding THE Cookie
For my Technology Applications Class we have to list some criteria and evaluate what makes a good chocolate chip cookie. So here it goes!
My 3 criteria:
1. Needs to be a soft cookie. You know, how it still sort of tastes like cookie-dough?
2. Needs to have quite a bit of chocolate chips. I like a cookie to actually taste like chocolate. I don't like cookies that have so few chocolate chips that you can count them.
3. Needs to stay in cookie shape when dipped in milk. I like to dip my cookies in milk and I don't like it when a cookie turns to mush.
I bought a thing of Nabisco's Chewy Chocolate Chip Cookies. I bought them based on the "chewy" aspect in the title. And it was indeed chewy. It completely met my first standard. It was soft, chewy and a delicious cookie. The cookie also met my second criteria: it had a lot of chocolate chips! I could actually taste a lot of chocolate when I ate the cookie, and it was just enough that it didn't overpower the cookie. Finally, I dipped one of the cookies in milk. It was perfect. It didn't fall apart, and it tasted awesome with the milk. Overall, Nabisco's Chewy Chocolate Chip Cookies met all of my criteria. They were absolutely amazing. These cookies are definitely worth eating and I don't expect them to be around much longer in my apartment! Yum!

New Week
So my countdown to fall break has begun. only 3 weeks!!! Nothing too exciting to report this weekend. Got Ted Drews on Friday and watched the Prince of Persia. Love it!! Saturday was parents weekend lunch with my sorority, DG. My parents couldn't come/ditched me for an art fair :), so I went with some friends. We rented out Bar Louie and it was fun. They have really good food so I'd recommend it. After that I just chilled at home waiting for the fireworks show. Went over to Marchetti for the show and watched it from someone's balcony. Great view and I loved the fireworks considering it down poured for the 4th of July and there were no fireworks. Watched a funny movie that night and then slept in till 11:30. I have never slept in that late ever! Granted I may or may not have gone to bed around 3 but still!
I have two tests this week, Calc and Growth Development and Learning. Keep your fingers crossed for Calc!! Well, that's about it for me. I'm off to bed. Here's to a new week! (18 days till fall break!!)

Soccer
So since I am not tired I figured that I would update this thing. Tonight was definitely a fun night and it all happened in about an hour or so. I went over to Katie, Caroline and Victoria's apartment to hang for a bit and lo and behold the boys rec soccer is playing on the soccer fields. Now, I am normally a very shy person, but for some reason being in someone elses apartment up on the 3rd floor where no one can really see you tends to give me some confidence. huh go figure haha. So I open up their windows and we proceed to start cheering for the boys on the field. We get some glances but most of the boys are way too into their heated game of soccer...Then at the end of the game I get really gutsy and yell out the window "303 come and visit!!!!" Victoria and Katie just about died. We all duck and are on the ground laughing. Victoria is absolutely mortified and Katie and I are laughing. Then to top it all off, it turns out two of the boys live across from them. HA! These are the nights that I love. Just hanging with my friends being absolute goofballs and laughing till our stomachs hurt. We proceeded to cap off the night with an impromptu dance party and I happily proceeded home. Great night, great friends.

21st Century Literacy
In my Technology Applications class we learned about information literacy and being able to determine if stuff we are finding on websites is legitimate or not. The only thing that I had been told about websites was to not trust them (ok but which ones?) and to not put all your information on the internet. That is about it. The only website that I knew to be wary of was Wikipedia because anyone can post anything on it. After learning this unit, I now know how to correctly see if a website is real and to be trusted. There is a whole checklist of things that you need to go through to see if a website is real or not. You have to first check the author and his/her credibility, look at the URL itself and see if anything suspicious is there, search for any "about us", "contact us", "biography" and other such tabs, and look to see where the author got his/her information. Look at footnotes and references and Google those to see if his/her references are even legit.
Here is an example of a legitimate website: http://www.cnn.com/
Here is an example of a not legitimate site: http://www.d-b.net/dti/
We also learned about how to search for things. Using the Boolean words (and, and not, or) and using quotation marks around things for specificity. You can also change the settings to help you in your searching so you do not spend hours trying to search through your many many results.
Overall, this unit really helped me come to realize that if you put in just a little bit of effort, you can simplify your search time, get better search answers, and find out if the information from the site you are using is credible. I would definitely suggest teaching this to kids in a simpler form so kids can learn early to not believe everything they read.

Injuries
Wow what a weekend. Basically it consisted of me getting hurt, a lot haha. Friday didn't really do anything. Went to my friend Katy's apartment and watched LOTR (lord of the rings for those who don't speak nerd) and then just chilled at my place. But while at Katy's I tried to scare Caroline who was on Katy's bed and ended up falling on top of Katy's air-conditioning vent. Scraped up my ankle and arm. Injury 1. Saturday I went to the City Museum with the DGs. It was a lot of fun and it was a great way to get to know the new girls. There I bruised my knees and scratched up my elbow. Injury 2. And finally, Saturday night was Beta Party night. It was fun, but the drunkards had a lot more fun... There, while jumping up and down to a song, the ground was soaked with spilled drinks and so naturally I slip and I'm pretty sure sprained my ankle...Injury 3. Today, I went to Schnucks with Melissa and Katie to get some food and we walked back with 20+ pounds of groceries. I now cannot feel my shoulders. Injury 4.
So as you can see, a fun weekend, but overall painful.

Vampires
Hello! So tonight the Vampire Diaries is on tonight and I'm super pumped! Got to love vampires! I am a totally on the vampire bandwagon right now. With Twilight and True Blood (better than Twilight shhh!) and all the books out about vamps, you just can't help but love them.
So anywho, yesterday I pretty much did nothing, but that night I met up with my Anchormate and that was fun. Today was rainy, but I only had one class so all in all a good day! O! And I my bump group for DG (Go A for Awkward!!) won the competition within our sorority and we all got gift cards to Jimmy Johns! Score!
And for another random tangent, my roommates and I have a heard of elephants that live above us. Seriously, it sounds as if they are dropping bowling balls all the time. Not to mention they have a full band up there...We are currently at war with the enemy and I bang on their ceiling when the bowling balls start dropping. Then it gets quiet for the time being. Speak of the devil, time to go bang on the ceiling! Adios!

Anchormate
So today I only had one class and it was easy. Education Foundations. Took a quiz and then got our school assignments for our observation hours. Hopefully after this class I will know what I'm majoring in. Today I had lunch with my Anchormate (aka newbie in the sorority paired with an upperclassman). Her name is Mary and she is awesome. Love her as a DG! We have our first chapter tonight and its a formal one so it will be fun to dress up cute. Well today has been a boring day. Off to finish homework then to DG whatnot!

A Vision of Students Today
A Vision of Students Today
In my Technology Applications class we had to watch the video of A Vision of Students Today. It surprised me at how true this video really is. When the kids were holding up their signs, one of the ones that stood out to me was the sign that said "I buy hundred dollar textbooks that I never open". This is so unbelievably true. I had a ton of books last semester and the only ones that I actually opened and read were the ones for my Intro to the Novel class. I would occasionally peek in Bio or Psych, but definitely not hundreds of dollars worth of reading. Then at the end of the year when you try to sell your books back you basically get nothing. They wouldn't even accept my $200 Biology book because there was a new edition out. There went $200 right down the drain. What would be really nice would be if the teachers had books online. Right now my friend is doing her Spanish homework through her online book. After watching her for a while, I realized how many more options are given to you if something could be online. She is listening to things in Spanish and doing online exercises that are explained in great detail through various steps. A regular textbook cannot do any of these things.
The other part of the video that I liked was the part about how students have 26.5 hours of stuff they do each day after everything has been added up. I did an exercise similar to this in my U101 class and it also had more hours than I could handle. It is weird to think of all the things that we do at the same times as other things. For instance, right now I am on Facebook, doing homework and watching TV all at the same time. As the video said, "I am a multi-tasker, I have to be".
Overall, this video has a lot of truth to it. Our world is a technologically based world and it is only getting bigger as shown in the video of the younger students. Technology is not the most important thing in life and cannot help us solve the worlds problems. People need to start realizing this.
